A Ballaghaderreen businessman is urging businesses in towns about to be bypassed by the upgrade of the N5 in county Roscommon to seek support now.
Pat Towey of Towey's Spar and Top Oil said very few businesses can survive these bypasses because footfall is decimated and there is no support forthcoming from any statutory agencies either.
Mr Towey says when the then National Roads Authority built the bypass of Ballaghaderreen in 2014 there was no interaction with the businesses of the town.
And he says the national authority claimed that the town didn't qualify for any enhanced signage along the route because of its low tourist numbers.
Mr Towey has described this as a poor excuse for any town trying to drive business forward.
