It's hoped Ballaghaderreen library will re-open to the public in Summer 2023.
In accordance with planning guidelines consultants have now been appointed and construction work on the listed building will be completed in quarter two of next year.
The library closed at the beginning of the pandemic and has no re-opened since due to necessary upgrade works.
The improvements will include upgrades to fittings and furniture, disability access improvements, the development of a dedicated space for teenagers.
It will be the first library in County Roscommon to undertake the my open library initiative, which will see an increase in opening hours.
Local TD Claire Kerrane has welcomed the update and says it's important the project remains on track.
''It's welcome and it's good news in relation to the movement of this because it was stalled for some time while the consultants were being put in place. And that was, of course causing frustration to people living locally. And a lot of people in Ballaghaderreen and on the surrounds of Ballaghaderreen who really rely on the library. It's going to be exciting when it reopens. We just need to make sure now that the works go to plan and that that timeline of reopening next summer is exactly as it says it is now and it will reopen next summer.''
