Construction on the Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue road could begin in June 2023.
CEO of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Peter Walsh, confirmed that the tender for the project has been extended to February of next year.
There will then be a timeframe of three months to award the contract.
200 million euro in funding has been allocated to the project and Roscommon-Galway Senator, Aisling Dolan, has welcomed the news.
"This means it'll take off the heavy arctic trucks, it's going to make the road a whole lot safer for people wo travel on that road, for road users all over Roscommon and particularly for the communities of Tulsk, Strokestown, Frenchpark, and Bellanagare. It's going to be a fantastic development but it is crucial that we see the funds allocated and it was great to hear from the CEO of TII that this is a priority project for the government".
