Ballymahon Town Team has sought planning permission to convert the old Convent of Mercy building in the town to a community resource centre.

In conjunction with Longford County Council, it's hoped the old building, which is located on spacious grounds behind St Matthew's Church, can be refurbished into a multifunctional community resource centre.

If approved, the Bridgeways Family Resource Centre in the Dean Egan Library will move over into the modern redeveloped site which will enhance access to local services.

The plan will also see extra space allocated to the existing Convent Day Care Centre which already operates from what was the original oratory of the convent building.

Permission is also being sought for a multi-purpose communal space to the rear of the building.

PRO of the Town Team Niall Dowler says the building which is close to the hearts of many people in the town, was an obvious choice for their project.
