Bank Holiday campaign sees crackdown on local motorists

One car on the N4 at Drishoge in Carrick-on-Shannon was found to be travelling at 107 kilometres an hour in a 60km zone.

One motorist in the Shannonside Region was found to be travelling at close to double the legal speed limit over the Bank Holiday weekend. Nationally, 946 motorists were detected for speeding offences and 127 were arrested for intoxicated driving over the weekend. One car on the N4 at Drishoge in Carrick-on-Shannon was found to be travelling at 107 kilometres an hour in a 60km zone. While another in Westmeath was clocked at 81 kph in a 50 zone.

Three road fatalities this Bank Holiday weekend brings the total number of deaths so far this year to 115. Gardaí road policing operations for the Bank Holiday wrapped up this morning, with speeding, intoxicated driving and using mobile phones while on the road targeted over the last 4 days. Garda Inspector Peter Gilsenan of the Roads Policing division says road safety campaigns will continue until there are no more deaths:
