Leitrim and Longford both recorded a slight rise in the number of children born last year
New figures from the CSO show heart disease was the biggest killer in both counties last year - with cancer responsible for 160 deaths in Roscommon last year.
There were 58,443 births in 2021, 2,484 more births compared with 2020.
This corresponds to a birth rate of 11.7 per 1,000 population, a rate increase of 0.5 from 2020.
In Longford, 543 children were born last year - up from 519 in 2020.
Leitrim had the lowest number of registered births in 2021 with 405. The same pattern was reflected in 2020 when Leitrim also had the lowest number at 380 births registered in 2020.
Roscommon had 746 new babies born last year - down slightly on 2020 when 759 children were born in the county.
36 women over the age of forty in Longford gave birth last year -with seven women under the age of 20 also giving birth.
The average age of first time mothers in Roscommon last year was 31.8 years old - and in Leitrim the average age of women who gave birth last year was 33.7
295 people passed away in longford last year - up from 272 in 2020.
In Leitrim, 247 people died last year - down from 287 the year before and in Roscommon the figure was 539, up from 507 the year previous.
Diseases of the circulatory system were the biggest killer in Longford and Leitrim last year - with cancer the biggest cause of death in Roscommon.
Five small children were also registered with the CSO as having died last year - including three infants below the age of one.
