Bloody Sunday remembrance event shows hope for reconciliation- Local Councillor

To date there have been no prosecutions and the British government has objected to carrying out legal proceedings against Troubles period crimes.

Leitrim Councillor Paddy O' Rourke says he believes yesterday's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday showed hope for the future of the community there.

Thirteen people died after British soldiers opened fire on a march in Derry in 1972, and a 14th man later died.

The Fianna Fail Councillor who's also Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council says he travelled to attend the ceremony yesterday and was struck by the dignity of the event.

While there has been some comment on the fact that no Unionist politicians were present yesterday, Councillor O' Rourke says he believes the manner and words used by Presbyterian minister Dr David Lattimer show there is hope for how the community in Derry is moving forward fifty years on from the terrible events of Bloody Sunday:
