The Athlone to Galway Cycleway has hit a substantial road block.
RPS, the consultants behind the project, has announced its intention to step away from the major transport project.
The 150 kilometre cycleway is part of a national route from Dublin to Galway, with the project moving through, Westmeath, Roscommon and Galway.
The international consultant, design and engineering company have informed Westmeath County Council, who are the lead local authority, that the project is no longer financially viable.
While both the company and Westmeath County Council are working to minimise the delay to the cycleway, this move will delay progress until a replacement is found.
A new pedestrian and cycle bridge was officially opened over the River Shannon in Athlone last month as part of the route.
