Speculation is mounting today that former OPW Minister and Longford Westmeath TD Kevin Boxer Moran could make a return to politics.
It comes following the announcement by Jamie Moran, son of the former minister, that he has resigned his seat on Westmeath Council due to new work opportunities.
Jamie Moran won a seat for the Athlone-Moate MD area on Westmeath council in 2019 at 20 years of age.
His father, Kevin Boxer Moran was a serving TD and held the OPW Ministry at the time.
Jamie Moran had been part of an independent team which ran in the local elections 2019, and which included former SF councillor Paul Hogan, and outgoing Independent councillor Michael O' Brien.
Boxer Moran who is a former Westmeath councillor since 1999 , lost his seat in the Dail in the elections of 2020 and has confirmed this afternoon that he has put his name forward as a replacement.
The usual practice when someone leaves a council seat is for the replacement to be left up to the party involved, but with this being an Independent seat and just one Independent member left on Westmeath council, the situation may be more complicated.
A decision on who will replace Jamie Moran will take place at the next monthly meeting of Westmeath County Council due to be held on Monday the 24th.
If the main parties were to decide, unusually, to oppose Boxer Moran's nomination the competition could be put to a vote.
Fianna Fail and the Greens hold the power on Westmeath council and it was the Fianna Fail party that Boxer left several years ago to carve out his Independent career in politics.
