A convent in Boyle is closing down after over two decades and the three remaining nuns are moving out.

The Sisters of Mercy have run the Galilee Spirituality Centre since 2001, but Sisters Mae McManus, Olive Flanagan and Margaret O'Brien are moving to Roscommon town and Athlone in September.

Local TD Frank Feighan has been paying tribute to the three sisters who are set to leave in a few months' time.

"It was a wonderful service and they were great friends and much loved and respected," said the Boyle man.

"The Galilee Community was a sacred space of prayer and reflection and many people called in and it was great to see the three nuns in town over the years.

"I just want to thank them for the great service they provided to the people of Boyle, Roscommon and indeed across the island of Ireland. I wish them well."
