Boyle councillor John Cummins says he hopes more people can be found to serve the north Roscommon area in the next local elections.
The long serving councillor told a meeting of the Comhairle Ceantair last night he won't be contesting next time out.
The Fianna Fail councillor says it's something he's thought about for a while, and last night was the first opportunity to tell party members face to face.
He says the job has become a lot more demanding in recent years, and more people are needed to serve the area from Boyle up to the north of the county.
When I joined the Council first you had about 35 meetings in the year, official meetings that you had to attend in Roscommon and now between subcommittees and SPC and municipal district meetings, between 60 and 70. So to me, it's a full time job and it has been a full time job for me for the last 15 years, and especially over the last five years.
The last time was nobody else selected in that area was myself so I covered a huge area in North Roscommon and hopefully after the next election, they will have two extra councillors in that area to share the burden on whoever is going to be walking into the future.
