John O'Mahony's funeral in Ballaghaderreen has heard how he had always remained 'the lad from Magheraboy' despite his many public successes. The legendary GAA manager and former teacher and politician from Kilmovee passed away last Saturday at the age of 71. His funeral mass is taking place today at St. Nathy's Cathedral this afternoon.
The mass is being co-celebrated by his brothers Fr Dan O'Mahony and Fr Stephen O'Mahony and his wife Gerardine's brother Fr Tommy Towey. Taoiseach Simon Harris, GAA President Jarlath Burns and Captain Paul O'Donnell representing President Michael D Higgins are among those in attendance. A number of gifts were brought to the altar symbolising John's life including a collection of GAA jerseys, a geography book, his Oireachtas card and a family photograph.
