Work on a major refurbishment project at Athlone garda station is set to start in the new year, and a dedicated state-of-the-art premises will be built for the garda water unit at Bliary.
The revamp of the garda station is set to cost almost €9 million, while the water unit will cost around €500,000.
Local Independent Alliance deputy Kevin Boxer Moran says he's been told by OPW Junior Minister Seán Canney that once the preliminary works are out of the way, work will begin on the new station early in the new year, which combines the existing building with the former social welfare office.
Deputy Moran says certain work at the buildings has to be carried out before the main contractor can be appointed and some of that has already begun.
