The current Minister for Enterprise and a local Senator have been officially selected to represent Fine Gael in Longford and Westmeath in the next General Election.
Minister Peter Burke and Senator Micheál Carrigy both received the nomination at a party convention held in the Athlone Radisson Blue Hotel last night.
Peter Burke is currently the Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment under Taoiseach Simon Harris with the Westmeath man previously serving as a Minister of State with responsibility for EU Affairs and Defence.
He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 2016 and prior to that was first elected to Mullingar County Council and Mullingar Town Council in 2009.
Meanwhile, Senator Micheál Carrigy was first elected to Longford County Council in 2009 and re-elected in 2014 and 2019, before his election to Seanad Éireann in 2020.
He is currently the party spokesperson on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sports and Media, and recently chaired the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Autism.
Both men will now contest the five-seater constituency with Minister Burke seeking to retain his seat and Senator Carrigy secure a second on for the party.
