Severe traffic issues affecting Carrick On Shannon will not go away until a new bypass is created according to a senior local Garda.
Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken says the sheer level of traffic using the N4 through the town is the main issue.
Speaking at this morning's meeting of the Leitrim Joint Policing Committee, several local councillors questioned senior gardaí over possible traffic measures.
The N4 bridge over the River Shannon in Carrick on Shannon is a well-known chokepoint for traffic heading east and west.
Motions submitted by Councillors Finola Armstrong McGuire and Paddy Farrell called on the Gardaí to present any methods or initiatives that could be put in place to tackle the issue.
Responding to the motions, Chief Super Glacken assured councillors that every option has been examined, but the current infrastructure is being overwhelmed by traffic levels.
Speaking at the virtual meeting today, the senior local gardaí claimed that until there is a bypass, nothing substantial can be done to improve the traffic situation in Carrick On Shannon.
