The cost of gas and electricity is set to fall when cabinet signs off on a number of measures aimed at reducing fuel bills this morning.
The package will see a cut to the VAT charged on electricity and gas down to nine per cent - though not on petrol, diesel and home heating oil.
A triple week payment of the fuel allowance will be paid, and the PSO levy on gas and electricity is expected to be scrapped.
Age Action said a more targeted approach is required to ensure those most at risk of fuel poverty are helped.
Policy Specialists with the organisation Natt O'Connor says the money is being stretched too far which will result in the most needy loosing out.
