Roscommon County Council must use their full powers to compel Eir to repair damaged and dangerous manhole covers.
That's the argument of local Councillor Pascal Fitzmaurice who brought the motion before the May meeting of the council yesterday afternoon.
Councillor Fitzmaurice believes the local authority should use the powers granted to it in the Local Government act 1964, specifically those dealing with dangerous structures.
In his motion to the council, the Castlerea based councillor says problematic manhole covers and surrounds must be addressed as a matter of urgency.
Speaking to Shannonside FM News following the meeting, Councillor Fitzmaurice says the manholes must be replaced or repaired for public safety.
'There are many of these manhole covers and it's taking them up to a year to get them repaired.
So I'm asking them to use their powers under the local government act to compel Eir to do it in a timely fashion.
Many o them are a trip hazard, some of them have holes in them and many people have highlighted these issues to me, including people with disabilities.
So it is totally unacceptable where a manhole cover, belonging to Eir, might have a hole in it or left in a state of openness for maybe up to one year and its terrible dangerous and totally unacceptable.'
