There have been calls for a five-year rehabilitation programme to upgrade dangerous footpaths in Longford. It comes following confirmation Longford County Council paid out almost €1 million in insurance claims over the last 15 months. The money was paid by the local authority's insurers for trips and slips on footpaths in the county.
At May's Longford Municipal District meeting, Cllr Peggy Nolan said the state of footpaths was one of the main issues on the doors ahead of local elections. The local authority currently does not have a funding stream in their budget for footpaths, with works currently under the umbrella of public bodies such as Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
