Calls for immediate funding of an Acute Brain Injury Unit for Longford

A site at St. Joseph's Hospital in Longford was identified by HSE officials in conjunction with St Michael's in Dun Laoghaire.

Funding must be allocated for the creation of an Acute Brain Injury Unit in Longford as soon as possible according to the county mayor.

Councillor Peggy Nolan has called on the Minister for Health to act upon the regional needs identified by the HSE in the provision of the neurological rehab and care unit.

Despite a commitment from the previous Minister of Health, Simon Harris, no funding has been allocated or ringfenced for the proposed unit.

According to councillor Nolan, people of all ages across the region are living with brain injuries in nursing and care homes when they should be receiving care in specialised facilities.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelley has promised to continue the conversation on the project with the HSE and local representatives.
