Re-opening an archway in the eastern bridge in the heart of Ballinasloe town is among the options a new study is suggesting as a way to alleviate flood risk in the town.
A public consultation is underway on emerging options to mitigate against major flood events in the town, which was badly affected by rising waters twice in the last fifteen years.
Its estimated a total of five kilometres of embankments, as well as several hundred metres of walls, and a mixture of direct defences as well diverting floodwaters will protect the town in a so-called once in a one hundred years flood event.
Public consultation on the project has got underway this week, with a virtual consultation room available as well as hard copies at the town's library.
Ballinasloe based Senator Aisling Dolan is hopeful that people will be able to meet with the design team in person to discuss the options and their impact.
