The boardwalk project is seen as a great potential boost for the area but there's concern that it won't get the proper funding and support unless Roscommon and Longford councils work in tandem

Longford County Council has no current funding available to begin a feasibility study to develop a boardwalk in Lanesboro to link up with a similar attraction planned for Ballyleague.

Last month Councillors in Longford expressed bemusement that their neighbouring County Council in Roscommon was going ahead with plans for the tourist attraction independent of any discussions with Longford's local authority.

Councillor Mark Casey claimed that a study for 'half a boardwalk' would be unlikely to be successful in seeking funding and he had never heard of a 'cul de sac' boardwalk before and the project was just 'lip service' to the area.

The Roscommon study is being funded through phase one money drawn down from the Just Transition fund, but head of Longford County Council finance John McKeon confirmed the local authority doesn't have money available presently for a similar study on the Lanesboro side of the River Shannon.

He confirmed they were waiting for the study to be completed before engaging in further discussions about the project.

Councillor Mark Casey says both councils should talk to each other again to try and resolve the  situation.
