A public consultation held on site yesterday saw dozens of people put forward their ideas for the old stone building.

A Longford museum, a visual arts space and a welcome centre are just some of the ideas put forward by the Longford public for the future of the historic Connolly Barracks.

The barracks was de-activated in 2009 and the 4th Cavalry stationed there were transferred to Athlone, with the facility remaining largely derelict over the past 15 years.

Longford County Council are seeking THRIVE funding of over €7 million for the regeneration of the building with a focus on community and the arts.

Initial plans call for a museum space, a podcast and recording studio and a substantial one storey extension to hold a performance space and a small cafe.

A planning application is expected to be lodged early next year, with work potentially starting by next Christmas is the project is funded.
