Calls for more riverbank safety measures in Carrick-on-Shannon

Enda McCarney lost his life in the river last month.

A Leitrim councillor is calling for additional safety measures to be constructed at Quayside areas in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The call comes following the drowning of Monaghan native Enda McCarney in the town last month.

Councillor Finola Armstrong McGuire believes the depth of the water close to council buildings requires markings, railings and more signage.

However, council officials say the erection of any barriers or guardrails would prevent the rowing of boats to launch for regattas and boating events.

Speaking at this months meeting of Carrick on Shannon MD council officials stated they don't believe barriers are an option which would instead stop people from accessing the Shannon.

However, Councillor Armstrong McGuire feels more needs to be done:
