There's a call to remove the sale of a house as a grounds for eviction.
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy is making the call in reaction to the large number of renters being given notice to quit as their landlords sell on properties.
A Threshold report outlined how its advisors are answering one call every 20 minutes from people receiving eviction notices.
Deputy Murphy wants the Government to buy the homes that landlords leaving the market own:
I think what we need to say to landlords leaving the market is that the state will buy those properties.
In that way we ensure nobody is made homeless and we expand the public housing stock.
That is the immediate answer here.
Instead of talking about tax breaks for landlords and all of those sort of things.
We should simply say no we are not going to allow anyone to be made homeless because of a landlord selling up
