The issue of dog attacks has come to the fore again following an incident in which a child was seriously injured in Wexford recently

There are calls for a special task force to be set up to look at rules around the ownership of restricted dog breeds.

The Irish Kennel Club has described some restricted dog breeds as a menace on society.

Garda data shows there were 1,705 dog attacks on people between 2016 and 2021.

The Irish Independent reports the figures indicate the number of dog-on-person attacks is rising each year.

President of the Irish Kennel Club, Sean Delmar says better regulation is needed.

'I think there should be a joint group put together to actually have a look at this, and to come up with effective legislation, and approaches, and ways to do it right across the board.

So I think if the government departments, the Kennel Club, the veterinary profession, these type of people, and the local authorities, can get together, we can come up with a programme that controls this better than it is at the moment.'
