A Leitrim councillor says she'd like to see some agency like Waterways Ireland take over the former Town Hall building in the town.
Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire has bene speaking after the local authority agreed at its monthly meeting today not to go ahead with the idea of disposing of the building for possible private investment.
The council had sought expressions of interest from interested parties because it said the structure would pose significant challenges in meeting zero carbon and accessibility requirements that will become necessary for public buildings.
The sale of the building though is ultimately a decision for the elected members and Councillor Armstrong Maguire received support today when she said THE Town Hall shouldn't be considered for disposal.
The Fine Gael elected member says she's had a lot of proposals put forward for the possible future use of the historic building, and funding streams will have to be explored.
She says an agency like Waterways Ireland could make an ideal tenant…
'Particularly with the navigational theme, the waterways theme that could be within that building.
Through Waterways Ireland for example, funding could be focused on and reached.
That is another conversation and that is bringing Waterways Ireland into it.
In looking at it and looking forward, it is felt it would be very much the theme of Waterways Ireland to take it as a building and have their offices in it and perhaps community rooms that could be used.'
