A local campaigner on the dangerous junctions at Cootehall and Croghan says it could have taken years for any action to happen without pressure from the local community.
Noel McTiernan says a Facebook Page set up in 2012, and subsequent public meetings in 2018, meant that politicians and Transport Infrastructure Ireland had to take notice of the concerns.
The campaigners highlighted accidents and near-misses that have taken place at the junctions consistently over the last 10 years, and this week TII have given the go-ahead for improvement works.
Roscommon County Council have now issued tenders for the project and it's hoped that work can begin in the coming weeks and be completed by the end of this year.
Noel McTiernan says local people are delighted with the news, but adds that they were never going to let the issue go.
