Carrick-on-Shannon's CCTV system has been hailed as playing a key role in the apprehension of a suspect in relation to a number of recent thefts in the town.
The latest meeting of the county's Joint Policing Committee heard that a male carried out a series of thefts from a variety of businesses in the town in recent weeks.
Superintendent Chris Grogan explained that support from the business watch scheme in the town, as well images obtained through its CCTV system played a key role in leading to the suspect being arrested, charged and being brought before the courts.
Carrick-on-Shannon business owner and Councillor Finola Armstrong McGuire is encouraging anyone who is a victim of crime to report it to gardai in order for a proper investigation to begin.
She says gardai want to hear from people and their concerns :
"We have two community gardai and they certainly could be asked for if people are nervous about reporting them (crime). I do think that when we come together and report to the gardai, we have better stats and we have a better chance of them being caught. It was our CCTV in conjunction with those who reported some incidents in the town last week that led to the apprehension of a certain person."
