Carrick-on-Shannon had the highest fertility rate in Ireland in 2021, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office. The Leitrim town had a 61.2 fertility rate per 1,000 women aged between 15 and 49 that year. The findings are from the CSO's Births and Deaths at Local Electoral Areas report for that year. Enniscorthy in County Wexford was second with a rate of 60.8 and Ballybay-Clones in Monaghan was third at 60.6. The lowest rate was recorded in the South-East Inner City in Dublin which had a rate of 29.8.
Two Leitrim towns were among those with the lowest number of births in 2021, however. There were 104 births in Ballinamore and 117 in Manorhamilton, putting them in the bottom three nationwide.
