A Roscommon Secondary school is currently dealing with an outbreak of meningococcal illness. 2 cases have been confirmed in Abbey Community College Boyle and the HSE has also said that one probable case of infection is being investigated. Public Health were notified of the cases in early February and close contacts have identified and been offered preventive treatment as appropriate. The HSE say due to the 3 students being in the same school, they are following national guidance and as a precaution will offer one dose of an antibiotic to all students and staff today.
The HSE also said in a statement to Shannonside FM that it is important to stress the risk to others in the school is very low and this action is a precaution. Signs and symptoms may include Severe headaches, Fever, vomiting, drowsiness and discomfort from bright light, with the HSE advising the public to notify their local GP as soon as symptoms are detected. Speaking to the Joe Finnegan show this morning, principal of Abbey Community College, David Harding, confirmed that the 3 students are doing well with 2 of them back at home recovering.
