Independent Councillor Mark Casey has officially taken the helm of Longford County Council this afternoon.
It's the Lanesboro man's second term as Cathaoirleach and the first appointment of the new council since the 2024 local election earlier this month.
He joined fellow independent Turlough McGovern and the 8 Fine Gael Councillors in the local authority to form a coalition for control of the council just days after the election.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news moments after his appointment, Councillor Casey says there are numerous challanges still facing Longford:
Fine Gael's Peggy Nolan was also appointed as Leas Cathaoirleach of the Council after a proposal by Paul Ross and seconded by Paraic Brady.
Speaking in the Chamber, Councillor Nolan says she looks forward to working with her colleagues across the political parties for the next five years.
