The newest bridge over the river Shannon has been officially opened in Athlone today.
The Greenway Bridge now forms a midway point on the planned Dublin to Galway Greenway, a 270 kilometre route spanning the width of the country.
The 13 million euro project was completed last month with sections of the main structure itself first floated down the Shannon last August.
Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers, officially opened the bridge as part of a special event this morning.
Tourism Officer with Westmeath County Council, Una Dorris, praised local business and communities for their support this morning:
'We also had a lot of activity from local businesses who got involved.
We had Athlone Castle here, the Viking Boat tour, the hot tub boat and the various other boat tours you can do.
Along with a lot of really great community efforts, you know Athlone Boat Club were here, Athlone GAA and a local cycling club.
It was a really good combined effort and celebration between local businesses and communities.'
