Ciara Mageean has become the first Irish woman to run a sub-two minute 800 metres.
Mageean at the international meet in Bern this evening clocking a time of 1:59.69 shaving point 89 seconds off Rose Anne Galligan’s previous national record.
Mageean crossed the line with more than a second to spare ahead of Norway's Hyenne Hedda who clocked 2:00.72 with France’s Lamote Renelle third in 2:01.50.
Former Irish 800 metre record holder Sonia O’Sullivan was quick to congratulate Mageean on her new record.
