Close to 100 horses have been seized by local authorities in the region over the last three years.
The animals were taken under the Control of Horses Act 1996, for a range of issues including animal welfare, ownership and abandonment.
Between 2018 and 2020, 94 horses were seized by local councils, excluding Roscommon, where figures are not currently available.
Longford had the largest amount of horses removed from owners over the last 3 years, with 57 animals seized by the council.
Of these 18 were euthanized, 37 were re-homed and 2 were reclaimed by their owners.
In Leitrim 23 animals were taken in by the local authority with the majority of them re-homed and 6 put down.
Figures for Cavan and Monaghan are currently incomplete but show 7 horses seized by each council.
In Cavan, all 7 horses taken by the local authority were destroyed, while in Monaghan, 5 were re-homed and 2 were euthanized.
In total, over half the horses seized by local councils have been re-homed, while 33 have had to be put down.
