Close to 10,000 standard driving tests were held in the Shannonside Region in 2024 with just over half of new drivers passing. New figures from the Central Statistics Office released this week breaks down the number of tests, the pass rate and the amount of test no shows per county. 9,577 people took a driving test in Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon in the 12 months of last year. On average 52 percent of those were successful and gained a full category B licence. Athlone saw the largest number of tests held in the region with 3,805 completed in the town over 12 months.
Of these tests, just under half of those taking it failed, with 50.8 percent successful. Roscommon was next with 48.5 percent of the 2,456 new drivers gaining their licence after the test in 2024. Longford had the lowest pass rate in the region at 48 percent, with 1,742 people taking their test from January to December. Leitrim had the lowest amount of tests but the highest pass rate locally, with 62 percent of people passing their driving test. All in all, 1,574 people sat a driving test in the county last year.
