Close to 7,000 fines have been issued by Gardaí in the Shannonside region to speeding motorists so far this year. The figures show 6,735 fixed notice penalties issued by Gardaí in the Roscommon/Longford/Mayo Division and the Sligo Leitrim Division. If a motorist drives over the speed limit they get three penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €160, with that amount growing to €240 if not paid within 28 days.
The Roscommon/Longford/Mayo Division saw almost 5,000 fines from January to September on speeding alone, while the Sligo Leitrim Division recorded 1,831 F.N.Ps in the same period. 139 people have died on Irish Roads so far this year, with Gardaí pleading with motorists to reduce speed and drive responsibly.
