Detective Garda Colm Horkan has been described as someone who brought a warmth and gentleness to people's lives.
Hundreds of people watched via social media the first anniversary mass for the Charlestown native who was killed in a shooting in Castlerea on June 17th last year.
Monsignor Tommy Johnston, Parish Priest of Charlestown, told Com's family and friends who attended the private mass last night that the Castlerea-based garda touched the hearts of many, young and old.
He recalled seeing a teenager pay respects at the grave of the 49-year old in recent weeks, remarking that the boy may at some point have experienced Colm's kindness , or else wished to just pause and remember the much loved Garda.
Words spoken at the funeral of a policeman who died just a day after Colm in Auckland New Zealand were also remembered at the mass by Monsignor Johnston.
He explained that the description of 28-year-old Matthew Hunt could also apply to Colm :
