Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey has announced that he will not contest June's European election.
The sitting MEP for Midalnds North West Constituency announced his decision today, as his party's selection convention gets underway in Athlone this weekend.
According to MEP Markey, he believes a two candidate approach to the constituency is best.for the upcoming election.
In a statement, the Louth man says he intends to return his focus to his home county and will contest future elections.
His decision leaves Fine Gael seeking to have Maria Walsh re-elected and well known jockey Nina Carberry gaining a seat.
Colm Markey thanked his family, supporters, team and fellow party members, while also wishing Simon Harris success in his upcoming role as party leader.
