The Garda Commissioner has ordered a review of the investigation into the death of Rooskey man Liam Farrell.
The Farrell family has welcomed the commitment from Drew Harris.
Farrell, 87, was found dead at the back door of his home in Rooskey, Co Leitrim, in January 2020.
His family believes he was attacked before he suffered a cardiac death.
They called for a fresh garda investigation after an inquest returned an open verdict in Carrick-on-Shannon earlier this month.
Speaking after the Policing Authority meeting yesterday, Commissioner Harris ruled that out.
But he has agreed to a review of the original investigation.
A Garda spokesman said: "Speaking after the Policing Authority meeting today, the Garda Commissioner re-iterated that An Garda Síochána carried out a full investigation, into the discovery of the body of Mr Farrell on the evening of the 12th January, 2020.
"A Garda investigation file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions. No prosecution was directed.
"The Garda Commissioner further highlighted that following the coroner's court verdict, An Garda Síochána will carry out a peer review of the original investigation.
"A peer review involves a senior investigating officer from an external Garda Division carrying out an examination of the original investigation.
"This is not a re-opening or a re-start of any criminal investigation."
Last weekend garda forensics analysed blood found in Liam’s shed, which was spotted by private investigators working for the Farrell family.
