The death of a serving Garda in a boat fire in Leitrim has affected the local community greatly.
That's the view of Carrick on Shannon Councillor, Finola Armstrong Maguire.
Deirdre Finn, a serving member of the Gardaí based out of Dún Laoghaire Station, died when the boat she was on caught fire at the Marina in Carrick on Shannon early yesterday morning.
The scene remains preserved and investigations are ongoing.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show today, local Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire says the entire community in the town are shocked at the news.
"A lot of safety features have been put in everything around Carrick on Shannon and it's well monitored and well watched but just some things get through the loop. This was in a quiet area where she had moored her boat. The river has been busy. There would've been people around her in other boats. There had been a rally locally which would have had a huge amount of boats on the river and there would've been other private moorings near her. Just, some things happen and it's totally a very sad accident. This was a tragedy that has affected the community and we're deeply saddened by it".
