Six priority areas have been identified to improve community safety in Longford - including a special focus on how to enhance garda visibility.
A total of 17 objectives have been identified as part of the action plan of the Longford Community Safety Partnership.
Over 300 responses were received to the public consultation process of the Community Safety Partnership earlier this year seeking the opinion of people in Longford as to how to make the county safer and communities more welcoming.
It's just over a year since a chair of the CSP was appointed and the organisation is now progressing a number of initiatives in the Longford town - including a LEAP into soccer summer camp, as well as identifying a new space for the Ardnacassa Community hub.
A total of 17 key areas of attention by stakeholders such as the County Council, HSE, Gardai and community activists were identified as part of the CSP's Action plan which was approved this week under six broad headings.
Priority one is to enhance crime prevention and response and the perception of Garda visibility which will be achieved through supporting crime prevention initiatives in the county and working with the justice system to improve communication with communities.
Another priority is focused on enhancing integration and supports for minority groups and disadvantaged communities including responses and support for the Travelling Community.
Particular geographical areas will also be targeted by the Action plan - including Ardnacassa in Longford town and work will be also undertaken to progress extra family resource centres across County Longford.
It's hoped the completed action plan will be officially launched later this year by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.
