Complaints made to Leitrim County Council over the felling of trees

Motions by Councillor Sean McGowan and Maeve Reynolds highlighted the issue at the November meeting of the Carrick MD.

Leitrim County Council have been called on to re-evaluate their communications with the public after a number of complaints related to the felling of a pair of trees in Mohill. A cherry blossom and an ash tree were recently cut down at the O’Carolan Monument in the Town leading to a public backlash and a number of complaints to the council. The Council later stated that the roots of the trees were diseased and it was decided to remove them now to allow for replacements to be installed as part of ongoing public realm works. The local authority has confirmed that two semi-mature cherry trees will be transplanted into the site in the near future.

Motions by Councillor Sean McGowan and Maeve Reynolds highlighted the issue at the November meeting of the Carrick MD. A number of councillors were critical of what they say was a lack of communication with the public over the reason for felling the trees. Councillor Sean McGowan believes the significant importance of the tree in the locality warranted more public consultation:
