Serious concern is being raised over a rat infestation that's encroaching on the playground of a Longford crèche.
That's according to Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi who says large size rodents can be seen on the grounds of the Tir Na nOg playschool on St. Michael's road.
It's understood the rats are emerging from a derelict building close to the facility which the Fianna Fail representative says requires urgent action.
While a compulsory purchase order is in progress by the local authority to take over the unused property Councillor Adejinmi is concerned the situation may escalate into the nearby houses.
Speaking to Shannonside FM, Uruemu says children can hear the rats while attending the playschool.
''I have requested that as a matter of urgency, the problem with the rat infestation be looked at and dealt with. Just to safeguard the people on the other side of the building and and to enable people to conduct their businesses and conduct their affairs in a safe in a safe manner. It's a high risk situation to wait till the outcome of the CPO.''
