Serious concern is being raised over the future of the Leitrim Community Car Scheme.
The service transports older people, people with disabilities, and families at risk to hospital and GP appointments across the region.
It was set up in March of last year by Leitrim Volunteer Centre.
However costs have increased and Manager Josephine Stroker says they are running at a loss of 12,000 euro at the moment. It was hoped the HSE may fund the scheme however Josephine says this does not seem to be an option at present. In recent weeks under a pilot project the ESB provided Leitrim Volunteer Centre with a new Corsa-e, which is being used along with volunteer's cars.
Speaking on Let's Talk she says the future looks uncertain.
"The HSE or any government department that sees it as part of their remit should fund it but if it doesn't happen we're going to have to shut it down to just the electric vehicle and that's it. It won't be completely gone but it'll be run on an extremely limited basis in terms of we can use the electric vehicle but we can only bring 1 person on a day to a hospital and that's it".
