Serious concerns have been raised at a Roscommon Hospital and residential facility following a recent inspection.
Sacred Heart Hospital & Care Home provides residential respite and rehabilitation to up to 95 adults near Roscommon Town.
The centre, run by the HSE, was subject to an unannounced inspection in May.
The centre was found to be non-compliant in 5 out of 13 regulations with substantial compliance recorded in a further three areas.
There were 72 residents on-site on the day of the inspection, with service users telling inspectors that they enjoyed their time in the care facility and felt happy to live there.
Despite resident contentment, the Sacred Heart Hospital & Care Home was found to have incorrectly applied for the renewal of their registration while other issues were found in staff training and development, where some gaps in mandatory training such as safeguarding, were identified.
Elements of the premises were identified as needing work, with a lack of storage space for residents personal belongings highlighted as well as general repair, re-painting and upgrade is required.
Infection control procedures were found to be substantially compliant during the inspection with the procure for cleaning and disinfecting requiring review and shower trays needing proper cleaning.
Significant concerns were raised of fire safety issues in the hospital, as no smoke alarms were located in the chapel and adjoining toilet/storeroom.
Inspectors also noted that fire equipment was missing from the designated smoking area and a fire door in the building was propped open with a bin.
Sacred Heart Hospital & Care Home has engaged with HIQA to conduct a body of work to address issues identified in the inspection.
