Fianna Fáil senator Eugene Murphy says the church is currently closed off, with Mass taking place in another room within the HSE nursing home.

There are concerns the chapel in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon town could be closed down.

Fianna Fáil senator Eugene Murphy says the church is currently closed off, with Mass taking place in another room within the HSE nursing home.

He says the historic chapel is an important facility for service-users and the community.

He is calling for clarity from the HSE about whether it will soon be reopened.

Murphy said: "I'm hoping we'll be able to sort this matter out. The church is important to people.

"Mass is now taking place within another room within the hospital.

"I would be hoping that there is no closing down of the church there, and whatever needs to be done to get it back up and opened, would be very important."
