Roscommon Councillor Ivan Connaughton says he felt that given his frustration with local government it would be best for someone fresh to try to represent the area.
The Athleague native announced last night via his Facebook page that he would be stepping down as a local councillor in the coming months.
The Councillor was first elected in 2014, and retained his seat in 2019's Local Elections.
He's inviting interested parties who wish to fill his seat on the Council to contact him to fulfil the co-option process.
The former Fianna Fail councillor says a committee will be formed to appoint his successor, and he will provide that person with support and advice.
His announcement yesterday evening comes just days after the auctioneer claimed he was close to quitting politics during a local M.D meeting discussion on Lough Funshinagh flooding.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound Councillor Connaughton says while the decision wasn't an easy one to make, a lot of people will be aware of his growing dissatisfaction at the diminishing powers of local representatives.
