Longford Council has confirmed that it has forwarded the Connolly Barracks site in Longford to the OPW as a possible site for modular accommodation to house Ukrainian refugees.
The confirmation comes in the wake of reports that several barracks around the country, including Longford and Cavan were under consideration to help in the refuge housing crisis.
The Connolly Barracks site is in the ownership of Longford Council for some years now.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show today, local councillor Seamus Butler says he believes putting modular homes onto the Barracks site is an obvious solution in providing refugee accommodation.
He says he's surprised it hasn't been put forward as an idea before now.
"I'm surprised they haven't been considered up to this. Longford Barracks is in the ownership of Longford County Cunncil. The buildings would not be suitable without years of qwork because some of them are listed buildings and would have to to be restored . There is big room there, especially a green field area at the rear which would suit immediately for modular housing. This modular housing should have been considered right from the start. There's even manufacturers in Longford who make these modular homes".
