It's hoped work on a new accessible changing room for members of the Athlone public will begin over the summer.
The 'changing room' will be located at the Civic offices in the town, and is the latest in series of improvements made to the town centre to allow people with mobility issues or disabilities easier access.
Funding of €75,000 has been made available for the project that will see infrastructure including accessible toilets and changing tables.
The council has confirmed a consultant will be appointed to complete a design within a number of weeks.
Councillor Frankie Keena first raised the issue at a local authority meeting over two years ago, and along with Athlone Access awareness group, helped deliver the funding.
