Construction work for the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river Shannon in Athlone will begin early next month.
The works will involve the installation of a cofferdam in the river to allow a dry area to be created for the building of the bridge supports and piers.
The navigation channel in the vicinity of the in-water works will be restricted to a width of 15 metres while the works are underway.
The bridge itself is being made in Spain and will be brought to Ireland in sections at a later date. It's hoped the bridge can be opened by Eastertime of next year.
The cycleway will then run along the Shannon's western bank, directly underneath the stone bridge and through to Athlone Castle.
